Chapter 16

Dominic

As the sun sank slowly into the ocean and lit up the water with a brilliant orange hue, Dominic peered into the oven, his pulse hitching up a notch. “I know the timer went off ten minutes ago, but when I cut into it, it still looked pink in the middle. Maybe I need to cook it a little longer?”

“It’s ham, Dominic,” Cassie shot back coolly. “It’s supposed to be pink. I’m sure it’s fine—just go ahead and pull it so it cools down. The veggies are roasted, the salad’s dressed, the wine’s good and mulled on the back burner… all that’s left to do is make our plates and dig in.”

Dominic’s mouth watered as he surveyed the bounty Cassie brought to the dinner table on the yacht’s top deck. The hotel chefs had left a fancy tablecloth and silverware that he’d done his best to artfully arrange as Cassie kept an eye on the kitchen. “I don’t think I’ve ever been hungrier in my life,” he said as he poured the wine.

An hour later, neither of them was hungry any more, and they had barely made a dent in the feast they’d prepared together—but they had given it one hell of a good try. Cassie leaned back in her chair with satisfaction and took an appreciative sip of the milky-white drink Dominic had managed to concoct. “This stuff is good. What’s it called again? Coquito?”

“Yep. It’s Puerto Rican eggnog. Even I can’t screw up rum and coconut.” Dominic tasted from his own goblet, then looked out over the water in the general direction of Miami.

Cassie seemed to understand where his focus had drifted to. “Thinking about home?”

He nodded. “One of my earliest memories from when I was a kid is drinking virgin coquito on the beach with Marc and our parents on Christmas Eve.”

“That sounds so nice.” Cassie cleared her throat. “I know your mom and dad both passed away a few years ago… It must be tough being away from the only family you have right now.”

“My niece and nephew especially. They’re my two favorite people on the planet. I love bouncing around their house for hours, then giving them back to their parents just in time to avoid fatigue-based crankiness. So yeah, it’s tough.” Dominic swallowed down thick emotion and smiled kindly at his guest. “But I don’t need to tell you that.”

“Nope.” Cassie sighed. “I’ve never missed a Christmas with my parents. Not ever. There was the one year when we spent half the day in a loan office, desperately trying to scrape together enough money to keep the family business afloat.” She snorted, seeming oddly nostalgic for the experience. “But at least we were together.”

Dominic nodded. “Didn’t you tell me that you and your parents did whale watches for tourists on a little catamaran?”

“It was tiny compared to the Balthazar.” Cassie smiled. “We were doing just fine, but then the marina we used was bought out by some conglomerate. They jacked up the boat fees until we couldn’t make the numbers work anymore.
